Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i3 The ADI group outperformed the structured-inquiry comparison group on the post-SLA-D measure of demonstrated scientific literacy (d = 0.83). → Gülüzar Eymur · Pınar Seda Çetin 2024

Quasi-experiment with two intact classes (34 ADI, 33 comparison) taught by the same instructor over ten weeks. The independent t-test gave "t (65) = 3.20, p < .05" and the printed effect size in Table 3 was d = 0.83 (post means 11.5 vs 8.60).
"Moreover, the students in the experimental group scored significantly higher than the students in the comparison group in the post- SLA-D (t (65) = 3.20, p < .05)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- The ADI group showed significant within-group gains on demonstrated scientific literacy from pre- to post-test, while the structured-inquiry group did not
- ADI students' item-level gains concentrated on items about determining variables for a research question and on scientific inquiry questions
- ADI students scored significantly higher than structured-inquiry students on the personal epistemology of science subscale, but not on value of science or self-efficacy subscales
- Interviewed ADI students reported engaging in scientific practices such as identifying variables, finding patterns in data, and developing methods, while no comparison-group students did
- Scientific literacy post-test scores, critiquing performance, and inquiry performance were closely related
- Critiquing problematic inquiry cases before virtual-lab inquiry augments the effect of virtual labs on middle school students' scientific literacy more than teacher demonstration — related
