Box-plot analysis of the score distribution shows the narrowing is strongest for relatively low-performing students: at the 25th percentile the gap falls from 23 points to "seven points (229 vs. 236)" between third and eighth grade. No standardized effect size is printed for this percentile contrast.
"In third-grade reading, for example, CPS students lag behind the rest of the state by 23 points (168 vs. 191). By eighth grade, that difference is down to seven points (229 vs. 236)."

- The eighth-grade reading gap between Chicago and rest-of-state African-American students disappears and reverses in Chicago's favor — related
- The Chicago-versus-rest-of-Illinois gap in ISAT math also narrows in upper grades, but less than in reading — related
- Chicago Latino students underperform rest-of-state Latino counterparts slightly in third grade but outperform them in eighth-grade reading — related
- Chicago White students score as well as or better than rest-of-state White peers in reading, and about the same in math — related
- When compared within racial/ethnic groups, large CPS-versus-rest-of-state gaps disappear, and some CPS groups outperform their counterparts — a broader claim this one bears on
