Controlled observational comparison of 206 adults with ADHD and 123 adults without ADHD from a family study, using eight self-report Barkley Current Behavior Scale items. The study reports "significantly higher in ADHD subjects than in non-ADHD subjects" with means 11.5 ± 5.48 vs. 2.68 ± 2.23 and z = 23.51, p<0.001.
"The mean total DESR scale score was significantly higher in ADHD subjects than in non-ADHD subjects (11.5 ± 5.48 vs. 2.68 ± 2.23; z = 23.51, p<0.001). Subjects with ADHD reported significantly more frequent occurrences of every item of DESR than non-ADHD subjects (p<0.001 for each item)."

- A majority of adults with ADHD show extreme DESR exceeding the 95th percentile of control subjects — a narrower finding that bears on this claim
- DESR overlaps with ODD but is not identified by ODD diagnosis alone in adults with ADHD — related
- More current comorbid conditions are associated with higher DESR scores in adults with ADHD — related
- Extreme DESR in adults with ADHD is linked to lower quality of life on nearly all QLES-Q-SF domains — related
