q3 i? Students' test-taking disengagement frequently differed between the initial test and the retest, with all four test types showing a highly similar pattern across the 16 disengagement combinations. → Wise 2019

Descriptive finding from the same-day retest analysis: engagement levels were cross-tabulated into 16 initial-test-by-retest combinations, and mean RIT differences were computed for each and plotted in Figures 1-4. Each of the four tests showed a highly similar pattern, though the magnitude of differences varied across test types.
"Test-taking disengagement was found to frequently differ between the initial test and retest. For each of the 16 disengagement combinations, mean differences between the two sets of RIT scores were calculated. Figures 1-4 show the mean RIT differences for the different combinations."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Students who rapid-guess less on a MAP Growth retest tend to see score gains, while those who rapid-guess more tend to see declines — related
- Seriously disengaged initial testers who stopped rapid-guessing on retest showed large RIT gains, averaging about 6 points in Reading and 12 in Math — related
- E-M scoring partially accounts for observed RIT score differences between disengaged first tests and engaged retests — related
- Rapid guesses on MAP Growth reflect a lack of engagement rather than a lack of knowledge — related
