Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? At the two wider spacings, similar noise gave RTs not reliably different from identical or same-response noise, while dissimilar noise approached the RTs of the opposite-response condition. → Eriksen 1974

Eriksen 1974¶
Eriksen, B. A., & Eriksen, C. W. (1974). Effects of noise letters upon the identification of a target letter in a nonsearch task. Perception & Psychophysics, 16(1), 143-149. https://doi.org/10.3758/bf03203267

Separate three-way ANOVA (Ss by Spacing by Conditions) on the noise-similar and noise-dissimilar conditions; spacing and noise variables were significant at or beyond the .01 level [F(2,10) = 55.32 and F(1,5) = 15.34]. At the closest spacing both conditions gave RTs midway in the range between same- and opposite-response noise.
"At the two wider spacings, similar noise gave RTs that were not reliably different from those obtained to iden tical or same response noise, while dissimilar noise approached the RTs obtained under opposite response noise condition."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Target-alone RT is approximately 30 msec faster in blocked no-noise trials than in trials intermixed with noise conditions, indicating a preparatory inhibitory set — related
- Error data mirror the RT findings: opposite-response-set noise caused far more errors at the two closest spacings — related
- Response-incompatible flanking noise letters impair target reaction time significantly more than response-compatible noise in a nonsearch task — related
- Target RT decreases as between-letter spacing increases, and the noise-condition effect is greatest at the closest spacing (Noise Condition by Spacing interaction) — related
