Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? In the Engaged high-achieving starters cluster (n = 28, 26.4%), decreasing engagement was not associated with a notable decrease in achievement level. → Mohammed Saqr 2023

Mohammed Saqr, Sonsoles López-Pernas, Satu Helske, Stefan Hrastinski. (2023). The longitudinal association between engagement and achievement varies by time, students' profiles, and achievement state: A full program study. Computers & Education. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.compedu.2023.104787
q2 · i? · associational · r2
Mixture hidden Markov model clustering of combined engagement-achievement trajectories identified an Engaged high-achieving starters cluster (n = 28, 26.4%) whose students mostly remained high achievers while lowering activity; State 1 emitted 87.4% Active engagement and 82.6% Achiever, and students were more likely to shift to the lower State 2 (transition probability 11%) than back (2.1%).
"Thus, in engaged high-achieving starters, decreasing engagement of students in State 2 was not associated with a notable decrease in their achievement level."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Motivation — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- For disengaged starters, starting low and failing to improve engagement was consequential, associated with a high probability of early drop-out, though about half improved — related
- For average starters, high or improving engagement was reflected in comparable achievement, while low or non-improving engagement was associated with low achievement and occasional drop-out — related
