Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i3 Students in the high-competency condition reported significantly more positive attitudes toward the PAL than students in the low-competency condition (Cohen's d = 0.91). → Kim 2006

Univariate ANOVA from the 2x2 experiment; attitudes toward the PAL were measured with a 10-item 5-point Likert questionnaire (alpha = .90) averaging informativeness and facilitation perceptions. Means and d = 0.91 are printed in Results.
"Students in the high-competency condition (M = 3.31, SD = 0.56) reported significantly more positive attitudes toward the PAL than students in the low-competency condition (M = 2.62, SD = 0.91). The standardized effect size for this difference was Cohen 's d = 0.91"
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- PALs expressing positive mood were perceived as more facilitating, engaging, and intelligent than negative-mood PALs
- A responsive PAL does not improve learner attitudes toward the agent, and competency and interaction type show no significant interaction — related
- Working with a low-competency pedagogical agent raises learners' self-efficacy in the task (d = 0.49) — related
- Working with a high-competency pedagogical agent improves novice learners' application of learning (d = 0.46) — related
