q2 i? Xu found, as this review reports it, that reading tasks with higher involvement load (named in the review as glosses plus dictionary use) produced better word retention, and marginal glosses were more efficient in fostering incidental learning. → Restrepo Ramos 2015

Xu's (2010) study assigned 125 ESL freshmen from a Chinese university, divided into four groups by entrance-examination scores, to four reading tasks on one passage with 10 target words (glosses; sentence marking; glosses plus dictionary; no aid); the review reports higher involvement load aided retention.
"Results suggested that tasks with higher involvement load, that is, tasks that involve search and evaluation, such as reading with glosses and dictionary use, are conducive to better word retention. Overall, the marginal glosses showed to be more efficient in fostering incidental learning"
Discussion¶
The review's list of Xu's four tasks does not match the original study. Xu (2010), "An Empirical Study on the Effect of Task on L2 Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition through Reading", Asian Social Science, 6(7), 126-131 (doi:10.5539/ass.v6n7p126), compared reading with marginal glosses, marginal glosses plus making sentences with the target words, a dictionary, and no external aid; its higher-involvement task is the glosses-plus-sentences one, and it concludes that marginal glosses were more efficient than dictionary use, which beat no aid. The task list on Reading with marginal glosses is the most beneficial task condition for incidental vocabulary acquisition gains, taken from another review, agrees with the original.
Related Claims¶
- Earlier meta-analyses, as reported second-hand, find that glosses improve L2 vocabulary learning and that text-and-picture glosses outperform single-mode glosses — the general claim this finding bears on, with the studies behind it
- Meaningful L2 learning is achieved through a conducive environment and authentic tasks and materials — related
- Combining intentional and incidental vocabulary learning produces greater gains and better retention than either mode alone — related
- Intentional vocabulary learning yields higher, faster gains and better retention than incidental learning through reading — related
- Reading with marginal glosses is the most beneficial task condition for incidental vocabulary acquisition gains — related
- Marginal glosses, dictionary use, and repeated occurrence of unknown words each positively affect incidental vocabulary learning — related
- Higher L2 reading proficiency, motivation, and involvement load are associated with larger incidental vocabulary gains — related
- Combining textual and pictorial glosses improves incidental vocabulary learning more than single-mode glosses — related
- Adult ESL students who read a short story could use incidentally acquired words in sentences, while students who learned word meanings in isolation could not — related
- Practice defined as meaningful language use plus effortful practice of difficult features is beneficial and even essential for second language acquisition — related
