Stern's account of Kerschensteiner's observational study of "some 50,000 children of the public schools" of Munich, who made free-hand drawings from memory and from nature. Stern reports the exceptional drawings came almost all from very poor parents and that in most cases the talent "had not been properly appraised by the school," in some cases not noticed at all.

"Among the drawings were found some of remarkable artistic merit, and these were found by Kerschensteiner to be, almost all, the work of children of very poor parents."
