Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Early literacy skill was uniquely and positively related to kindergarten composition fluency (γ = .58, p < .001) and to first-grade fluency (γ = .60, p < .001) and quality (γ = .36, p < .001). → Kent 2014
Evidence¶
Kent 2014¶
Kent, S., Wanzek, J., Petscher, Y., Al Otaiba, S. S., & Kim, Y.-S. (2014). Writing fluency and quality in kindergarten and first grade: The role of attention, reading, transcription, and oral language. Reading and Writing, 27(7), 1163-1188. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11145-013-9480-1
q2 · i? · associational · r2
Observational SEM of extant longitudinal data on a 265-student cohort (seven classroom clusters with fewer than five students, 10 students in all, were removed for the analyses), so the paths are statistical associations, not causal effects. Reading and spelling factors were so highly related (r = .95) that a second-order literacy factor was preferred via chi-square difference test (Δχ2 = 8.84, df = 4, p = .065); literacy showed the largest unique path to compositional fluency.
"Early literacy skill in reading and spelling (γ = .58, p < .001), as well as letter-writing fluency (γ = .13, p = .047) were also uniquely and positively related to students' composition fluency"
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Reading and Language — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Writing Skills — outcome: instruction changes it
Related Claims¶
- A model of kindergarten writing development including an attention factor fits better than a model with only language and literacy factors — related
- Kindergarten lexical literacy (word reading and spelling) predicts third-grade writing quality in both narrative and expository genres — related
- Kindergarten writing fluency does not mediate the relations between kindergarten component skills and first-grade writing outcomes — related
- Letter-writing fluency has a small unique concurrent relation to kindergarten compositional fluency but no significant relation to first-grade writing outcomes — related
- Spelling and attentiveness are uniquely related to writing conventions of first-grade written composition, but instructional quality is not — related
- Grammatical knowledge, reading comprehension, letter writing automaticity, and attentiveness are uniquely and positively related to substantive quality of first-grade written composition — related
- Kindergarten oral language is uniquely related to first-grade writing quality but not to compositional fluency — related
- Kindergarten attention regulation is uniquely and positively related to compositional fluency after controlling for literacy, letter-writing fluency, and oral language — related
- Kindergarten attention uniquely predicts both first-grade compositional fluency and quality one year later — related
- Reading comprehension is hypothesized and tested as a component skill of writing, with reading-to-writing directionality supported by prior longitudinal evidence — related
