Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i3 For low-WMC readers, seductive images led to significantly fewer correct causes recalled than the nonillustrated condition (η2 = .19). → Sanchez 2006

Sanchez, C. A., & Wiley, J. (2006). An examination of the seductive details effect in terms of working memory capacity. Memory & Cognition, 34(2), 344-355. https://link.springer.com/journal/13421

Experiment 1 planned comparison within the low-WMC group (n = 12 per condition): essays of low-WMC readers in the seductively illustrated condition contained fewer correct causes (M = .25) than in the nonillustrated condition (M = 1.17), η2 = .19.
"However, the presence of seductive images (M /H11005 .25, SD /H11005 .45) led to the recall of significantly fewer cor- rect causes than in the nonillustrated condition (M /H11005 1.17, SD /H11005 1.34) [F(1,22) /H11005 5.06, MSe /H11005 1.00, p /H11021 .05; η2 /H11005 .19]"
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- High-WMC readers show no seductive details effect, with seductive illustrations tending to yield the best performance — related
- Working memory capacity interacts with illustration type: seductive illustrations impair comprehension only for low-WMC readers — related
- Interesting but irrelevant details can impair comprehension and transfer, with effects that vary with the material and the learner — a broader claim this one bears on
- Adding relevant pictures or graphics to text improves learning from it, with a small pooled effect on reading comprehension, though whether dual coding explains the benefit is disputed — related
- WMC shows a main effect on inference verification but not on essay recall — related
- High-WMC readers view fewer seductive illustrations and spend less time on them than low-WMC readers — related
- In Study 2 with a longer text and five SD amounts, greater seductive detail amount again worsened recall (b = −0.33, p = .005) — related
- Adding seductive details to multimedia instruction significantly worsens recall of pertinent content compared with instruction without seductive details — related
