Within-student paired comparisons in the hierarchical multivariate model of 1,328 lesson ratings showed lower engagement in mathematics versus "lessons of English and science," leading the authors to call mathematics the subject with the lowest ratings.
"Paired comparisons showed further that students rated their behavioral/cognitive engagement lower in mathematics when compared to lessons of English and science (Table 4). The results, thus, suggested that mathematics was the subject with lowest student ratings of situational engagement."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶

- Lower secondary students' situation-specific engagement varies most strongly between lessons within students, with smaller between-student variation — related
- Students report higher engagement and lower disaffection in non-academic subjects (home economics, physical education) than in academic subjects — related
- Cognitive strategy use was highest in social studies and lowest in mathematics, and females reported more use than males — related
