In Rief et al. (2026), seventh graders practised algebra in the "Math with Matt" tutoring system. The Mindful version added an LLM-based mindful chat, in which the pedagogical agent Matt gave context-sensitive emotional support, and mindful (not only evaluative) feedback and hint messages; the Cognitive version gave cognitive support only.
Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Error rate per completed step was statistically comparable across conditions. → Rief 2026

Exploratory log-data analysis from all 252 participating students found error rates of M=0.46 (Cognitive) versus M=0.47 (Mindful) per completed step, not significantly different (W=7257, p=.606); equivalence was not tested.
"Error rate did not significantly differ between groups withM= 0.46 (SD= 0.38) for the Cognitive andM= 0.47 (SD= 0.45) for the Mindful group (Mann-Whitney-U,W= 7257,p= .606)."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Mindful-condition students completed fewer problem-solving steps and requested fewer hints per step than Cognitive-condition students — related
- The AI-fallibility warning did not significantly change error rate or time spent per problem-solving step — possibly the same claim (merge candidate)
- A warning message about potential AI mistakes increases seventh-graders' hint requests in a math intelligent tutoring system — related
- Hint Factory MDP-generated hints gave correct next-step hints over 80% of the time and a pilot showed students solved more logic proofs with hints — related
- Self-explanation support did not change Answer-item performance even though the explanation condition completed only half as many problems — related
- Students in the combined condition tended to make fewer errors and request fewer hints over time than students in individual-only or collaborative-only conditions — reports the opposite
