Field interviews showed later-year undergraduates changed their use of departmental spaces over their degree, and a PhD student described the space as "Not a place for work, because the undergraduates are here" outside summer. Early-year undergraduates developed cohort familiarity through habitual ingress and egress via the breakout space.

"Similarly, postgraduate students confessed to a greater sense of ownership during the summer months when undergraduate students no longer had timetabled teaching."
