Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Preservice candidates were more likely than intern candidates to pass a TPA on their first attempt (77% vs. 67%) and across all attempts (92% vs. 88%). → Patrick 2024

Patrick 2024¶
Patrick, S. K. (2024). How preparation predicts teaching performance assessment results in California. Learning Policy Institute. https://doi.org/10.54300/544.849
q2 · i? · associational · r2
Observational analysis of CTC TPA records for 14,415 preservice and 3,696 intern candidates taking the CalTPA or edTPA between September 2021 and August 2023. The report states "Both differences are statistically significant based on t-tests." No effect size is printed.
"77% of the preservice preparation candidates who took CalTPA or edTPA during the 2021–22 and 2022–23 academic years passed on the first try, and 92% of these candidates passed across all attempts. In comparison, 67% of intern candidates passed on the first try and 88% passed across all attempts."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶

- Teacher licensure exams disproportionately fail teacher candidates of color without predicting teaching effectiveness — related
- Residents pass TPAs on their first attempt at higher rates than student teachers or interns in the linked subsample — related
- Residency completers report more intensive clinical experiences with higher support and are more likely to pass teaching performance assessments on their first attempt — related
- Elementary and special education candidates from programs rated higher on literacy and math preparation have higher odds of passing the TPA — related
- Sufficient clinical feedback predicts TPA passing for preservice candidates but not for internship candidates — related
