Reading the evidence codes

q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.

This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.

q3 i3 The 2005 technology-enhanced class scored significantly higher on FCI posttest (t(87) = 2.80, p < .01, d = 2.13) and Hake gain (t(87) = 2.90, p < .01, d = 4.06) than the 2004 no-technology class. → Brewe 2007

q3 · i3 · causal · r1

Quasi-experimental comparison of two intact Fall sections (2004 no-tech, 2005 tech) of the same algebra-based mechanics course with the same instructor. The article reports "the two classes differed significantly on Posttest score t(87) = 2.80, p < .01" with effect sizes d = 2.13 (post) and d = 4.06 (Hake gain).

Note (2026-10-15): both d values are printed by the source (arXiv 0709.2738, results section), so the i3 stands on them. They are not consistent with the printed tests, though: with t(87) = 2.80 and t(87) = 2.90 across two classes of 89 students in all, d is roughly 0.6, a medium effect. Read the i3 with that in mind.

"the two classes differed significantly on Posttest score t(87) = 2.80, p < .01 and Hake gain t(87) = 2.90, p < .01."
