Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i2 Children using the robot-assisted DS approach scored significantly higher on the therapeutic-communication measure than the video-based control group (d = 0.64), which the authors read as better communication; but the article defines a higher score on that measure as more difficulty communicating, so its own scoring points the other way and the direction of the effect is unresolved. → Ching-Yi Chang 2023

Randomized controlled experiment in a regional hospital children's ward: experimental group (n = 21) used robot-assisted digital storytelling, control group (n = 26) received video-based health education. The experimental group "obtained higher scores on therapeutic communication than the control group" (mean = 3.24 vs 2.65). The measure is the two-item physician/nurse communication module of the PedsQL ("It is hard for me to tell the doctors and nurses how I feel", "It is hard for me to ask the doctors and nurses questions"), and the article states that "the higher the score, the more difficult it is for the respondent to communicate". By that definition the robot group reported more communication difficulty, yet the authors conclude the robot-assisted approach improved therapeutic communication. The article does not resolve the contradiction, so this result cannot be read as showing the approach improves communication.
"There was a significant difference in therapeutic communication between the two groups (t = 2.09, p < .05), with a medium effect size (d = 0.64)."
