Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q3 i? In a model of pooled correlations, SES has a significant direct path to latent reading (β = 0.12) plus significant indirect paths through phonological awareness (β = 0.09) and vocabulary knowledge (β = 0.09), indicating partial statistical mediation. → Li 2023
q3 i? Both mediators show significant partial mediation for each specific reading outcome: accuracy, comprehension, and fluency models all show significant direct and indirect paths. → Li 2023
Evidence¶
Li 2023¶

Educational Psychology Review, 35(4), 119. doi:10.1007/s10648-023-09834-1 (read from the PsyArXiv preprint, doi:10.31234/osf.io/7yv6r)
q3 · i? · quant-synthesis · r2
Two-stage MASEM (TSSEM) of the latent reading model (k = 458 independent samples) fit the data well (RMSEA = .014, CFI = .989). The study reports a "significant direct effect of SES on reading" plus parallel significant indirect effects through both mediators, i.e., partial rather than full mediation. The pooled studies are correlational, so the paths describe statistical mediation and cannot show that SES, a marker of family circumstances, causes the reading differences.
"The direct effect of SES on reading was significant, β = 0.12, 95 % LBCI [0.09, 0.16], and the model revealed significant indirect effects of SES on reading through PA (β = 0.09, 95 % LBCI [0.08, 0.11]) and VK (β = 0.09, 95 % LBCI [0.08, 0.10])"
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Phonological Awareness — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Reading and Language — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
- Vocabulary — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- SES shows significant direct and indirect effects on each reading outcome separately, with larger indirect effects through vocabulary for comprehension — related
- SES longitudinally predicts later reading (r = 0.24), and phonological awareness and vocabulary jointly explain about 45% of that association — related
- Age moderates the vocabulary-to-reading paths (effects increase with age) but not the fluency model or any SES paths — related
- Composite SES indices predict phonological awareness more strongly than single SES indicators — related
- SES is indirectly associated with listening comprehension through vocabulary, and has a significant total indirect effect on RCR — related
