Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? On the 1908 scale girls scatter more than boys in all diagnostic classifications except two, the overall difference amounting to 0.21 year. → Wallin 1921
q2 i? On the 1911 and Stanford scales boys earn more advance credits in every classification, exceeding girls by 0.10 year in both. → Wallin 1921
Evidence¶
Wallin 1921¶
Wallin, J. E. W. (1921). Intelligence Irregularity as Measured by Scattering in the Binet Scale. The Journal of Educational Psychology. https://psycnet.apa.org/journal/edu
q2 · i? · associational · r1
Descriptive sex comparison of average scattering and of proportions passing over 10 advance tests across the three scales and diagnostic classifications. The author offers this as slight confirmation of the view that the male sex is more variable, citing Yeung's finding that girls were only 0.63 as variable as boys.
"Thus the girls consistently vary more in the 1908 scale, and the boys in the other two, which are usually recognized as being more accurate than the 1908."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Gender — predictor: outcomes differ by group: a gap reflecting circumstances and treatment, not a cause
Related Claims¶
- Scattering on the Binet scales does not support the claim that unequal development is the specific characteristic of the feeble-minded; normal pupils scatter most and imbeciles least — related
- Scattering is considerably greater on the Stanford-Binet than on the earlier Binet-Simon scales, so conclusions about scattering differ according to the scale used — related
