q1 i? Rate score and comprehension score are being combined into a single silent-reading score using partial regression equations of each on independently judged reading ability, a step the authors call particularly important. → E. B. Skaggs 1918

A methodological report on test development at Indiana University: the scale is being compared with other reading tests by correlation with an independent statement of reading ability based on pooled ratings from four teachers for each child in a large junior high school. The scientific combination of the two scores is felt to be a particularly important feature.
"rate score and comprehension score are being combined into a single score in silent reading by means of the partial regression equations of rate score and comprehension score on reading ability, as thus judged."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Rapid reading gains about 26% more ideas per second than normal reading, and slow reading about 20% fewer, in all four groups — related
- Comprehension (ideas recalled) shows very little difference across slow, normal, and rapid silent reading rates — related
