q3 i0 Over three weeks, sycophantic (vs. neutral) AI reduced the gap between inclination to seek advice from AI versus close others (d=0.19), an effect that emerged early and persisted. → Lujain Ibrahim 2026

q3 · i0 · causal · r3
Three-week longitudinal experiment (N=1364, census-representative U.S. sample) with 12 sessions of conversation with sycophantic, neutral, or challenging AI or a no-AI control; weekly preference measured with mixed-effects regression. Mediation ran through "feeling understood by the AI (indirect = 0.22, 95% CI [0.06, 0.38], 59% mediated)" and helpfulness and positive affect, not certainty.
"compared to the neutral condition, participants in the sycophantic condition showed a smaller gap between their inclination to seek advice from AI and from close friends and family (0.37 pt on a 7-point scale;d= 0.19,p adj = 0.034). This shift emerged early and persisted across all three weeks."
Discussion¶
Related Claims¶
- Feeling understood by sycophantic AI grows with sustained use but yields no downstream benefits for feeling understood by humans or intellectual humility — related
- Sycophantic AI is rated higher than neutral AI on emotional support, esteem support, and certainty, but not informational support — related
- Sycophantic AI reduces satisfaction with real-world social interactions without reducing social time, via narrowing the perceived understanding gap between AI and humans — related
- After talking with sycophantic AI, people anticipate greater effort to feel understood by a close other and feel their dilemma is already sufficiently talked through — related
- A majority of users choose sycophantic AI over neutral and challenging alternatives, citing feeling understood and ease of conversation rather than advice quality — related
- AI companions are frictionless and sycophantic, lacking the corrective feedback that real relationships provide — related
- Teachers' most common concern is that agreeable AI companions remove the developmental friction through which adolescents learn to sustain human relationships — related
