Reading the evidence codes

q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.

This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.

q2 i? Free recall was superior to a mainly generative task when the expository text was of high quality, but showed an opposite pattern when the text was incoherent and lacking examples. → Julian Roelle 2023

The review attributes to Roelle and Nückles (2019), who manipulated text quality across two experiments, the finding that "free recall was superior to a task that elicited mainly generative learning when the expository text was of high quality." With an incoherent text, free recall was hardly better than restudy. No effect sizes are printed.

"The authors found that free recall was superior to a task that elicited mainly generative learning when the expository text was of high quality—in this case, engaging learners in generative activities was, similar to Karpicke and Blunt (2011), not even better than restudy."
