Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? Across Lessons 1, 3, and 4, students who transferred their prior knowledge (biology or AI) generally offered explanations in both domains, while students who did not transfer usually gave vague, incorrect, or no explanations; one exception occurred in Lesson 4. → Shenghua Zha 2025
Evidence¶
Shenghua Zha 2025¶
Shenghua Zha, Marcy Maulucci Bragdon, Na Gong, Jinhui Wang, Silas Leavesley, Rachel Eaton, Erin Bosarge. (2025). A Case Study of Integrating AI Literacy Education in a Biology Class. International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40593-025-00476-8
q2 · i? · qualitative · r3
Qualitative a priori coding of open-ended worksheet answers in Lessons 1, 3, and 4 using an adapted IRC framework; two raters reached consensus with Cohen's Kappa of 0.88. In 76 answers across the three lessons only one case explained the biological aspect well without transferring AI knowledge.
"First, students who applied their prior knowledge ( transferred) all offered explanations in AI and biology domains, though some were vague or inaccurate (Fig. 8)."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Prior Knowledge — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- Prior biology knowledge predicted new AI knowledge in Lessons 1 and 2 but not in Lessons 3 and 4 — related
- Prior Knowledge Determines New Learning — a broader claim this one bears on
- Homework explanations demonstrating understanding predict better isomorphic exam performance across all quartiles — related
- Deep understanding is characterized by coherent, interconnected mental schemas that make knowledge transferable — a broader claim this one bears on
