Subclaims¶
Reading the evidence codes
q is the design tier, i the impact, n the sample, and the kind with its r
the rigour judged within that kind: what each code means.
This claim: no standardized effect is recorded in observations/ for it yet, so no benchmark reading is possible.
q2 i? The Pearson correlation between mental and physical composite ranks is .21 (P.E. .064) at fourteen and .33 (P.E. .060) at fifteen years, low enough that children can be roughly distinguished into five groups differing in mental and manual ability profiles. → Woolley 1915
Evidence¶
Woolley 1915¶
Woolley, Helen Thompson. (1915). A new scale of mental and physical measurements for adolescents, and some of its uses. The Journal of Educational Psychology, 6(9), 521-550. https://doi.org/10.1037/h0075644
q2 · i? · associational · r1
Correlational analysis of the fourteen- and fifteen-year composite scores of the working-child sample, showing mental and manual ability correspond only loosely. The authors use this to distinguish five rough groups: poor, medium, and good in both, plus high-manual/low-mental and high-mental/low-manual groups.
"There is a positive correlation between rank in mental tests and rank in physical tests, but it is small. The Pearson co-efficient is .21 P. E. .064 at fourteen and .33 P. E. .060 at 15 years."
Discussion¶
Learner Variables¶
- Physical Well-Being — predictor: learners who differ on it differ in outcomes
Related Claims¶
- Composite mental test rank shows a large positive correlation with school grade, physical rank only a small one — related
- Individuals' composite scale ranks are fairly constant from age fourteen to fifteen — related
- Tall, heavy children with good lung capacity are further along toward mental maturity as evidenced by school progress, based on 21,682 final term grades — related
