Description

The looking-while-listening procedure assesses efficiency of online spoken language comprehension in infants and toddlers. On each trial children see pictures of two familiar objects and hear speech naming one; gaze patterns are videotaped and coded frame-by-frame, yielding a high-resolution record of eye movements aligned with target noun onset, with inter-observer agreement averaging 97%. In this study it yielded mean reaction times for shifting from distracter to target picture at 18 and 24 months, used as the measure of speech processing efficiency.
