Description

A multi-dimensional coding procedure for analyzing small group chat communication in CSCL research, developed by the authors to address three methodological issues: "the unit of analysis and unit fragmentation", "the reconstruction of the response structure" and "determining reliability without overestimation". The procedure treats analysis units and the connections between them — threading — as central, since threading "proved essential to handle unit fragmentation, to reconstruct the response structure and for reliability of coding". It extends chat analysis beyond the dyadic settings that have dominated CSCL research.
