Description

The research team developed a coding scheme for (1) behaviors (posture and gestures, facial expressions, and vocalics) and (2) regulation strategies including SRL codes (C.2.1–C.2.6) and SSRL codes (C.3.1–C.3.2), plus social climate and participation codes (C.3.3–C.3.6), adapted from prior literature to fit a medical context. Each code was structured as "a superordinate code, a definition to that code, followed by an example of the code in a medical context," with nested subordinate codes. Four raters were trained; inter-rater agreement after the first negotiation ranged from 0.62 to 0.83 Cohen's kappa, described as "substantial" agreement, with perfect agreement reached after deliberation.
