Description¶
The study introduces the thematic unit, defined as "an idea or a chain of connected ideas", as a new unit of analysis for examining integration in written products. Unlike an idea unit containing a main verb, a thematic unit is broader and may span ideas within or across perspectives, from prior knowledge, or generated in response to the task. Ideas within a unit are connected by connective words, repetition of key concepts, organization, or elaborations. The authors claim it is better suited than idea units to reveal students' attempts to integrate content beyond single ideas.
