Use broad and specific keywords and develop methodological search filters to improve retrieval of arts-based research¶

Description¶
To facilitate information retrieval in a field with no shared vocabulary, the review recommends that ABR researchers "use broad as well as specific key-terms in the indexation of their articles" and combine methodological ABR terms (e.g. photovoice, theatre of the oppressed, participatory video) with types of arts-based research (art in research, art as research, research about art) and research phases. Review authors could also develop and test methodological search filters for sensitivity and specificity, since specific filters to retrieve ABR studies have not yet been developed or tested.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Indexation combining broad ABR terms with specific technique names and research-phase terms
Constraints¶
- No specific search filters for ABR studies existed yet at the time of the review
Target Learners¶
- educational and social science researchers using or reviewing arts-based methods
Target Learning Goals¶
- improving retrieval and communication about arts-based research across disciplines
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Direct Instruction: Keyword Search
- Adopt a conservative abstract-screening strategy with a 'maybe' category and keyword exclusion filters to prevent premature exclusion
- Future AI-SRL research should broaden search strategies, include educators and younger learners, address motivation, and apply longitudinal designs
- Boolean Operators
