Future ACS research should use longitudinal designs and objective, validated measures of active commuting¶

Description¶
The review recommends that "Future studies need to implement more rigorous, longitudinal designs (e.g., randomized controlled trials), using objective assessments of physical activity (e.g., using accelerometers validated for use with research)". If self-report is used, validity and reliability should be established, with multiple assessments across an academic year differentiating modality, frequency, intensity, duration, and group versus individual activity to determine dose–response relationships.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Assessments should be age, environmentally and culturally appropriate, per the review's recommendation.
Constraints¶
- The review notes only one of twelve studies measured ACS objectively (via ActivPAL3 accelerometer), so objective measurement is currently rare in this literature.
Target Learners¶
- children and adolescents in primary and secondary schools
Target Learning Goals¶
- accurate measurement of active commuting behavior and its relationship to cognition and academic achievement
