Description¶
An implementable training recipe in which an observer practices UFOV computer-administered tasks with display durations tailored to ability, trial-by-trial and block-level feedback, and trainer encouragement until criterion performance is reached. Display duration is then reduced, and once a duration-threshold criterion is met, task difficulty increases, for example by adding distractors to a concurrent localization task. The review states "The ultimate goal of training is to improve processing speed (reduce minimum duration thresholds for task performance) by slowly decreasing display duration until a criterion level of performance is met". A home-based variant on one's own PC has also shown efficacy.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Initial display durations tailored to the observer's ability; trial-by-trial feedback and feedback on trials correct at the end of blocks of 16 trials; a trainer or structured program encouraging continued practice until criterion levels are achieved
Constraints¶
- Efficacy for visually impaired older adults and for those with mild cognitive impairment has not yet been determined
Target Learners¶
- older adults with elevated baseline duration thresholds
Target Learning Goals¶
- faster visual processing under divided attention and distractor conditions
Affordances¶
- Useful Field Of View Construct
Claims¶
- Speed-of-processing training based on UFOV tasks reduces minimum duration thresholds in older adults, with benefits persisting up to two years [+W]
- Speed-of-processing training transfers to health and functional outcomes including reduced crash risk, improved driving, faster daily-task completion, slower health-related quality-of-life decline, and reduced depression risk [+W]
