Research agenda: investigate affective dynamics with within-person, longitudinal, and multi-channel methods¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article recommends three methodological advances: complement self-report with behavioral observation, implicit measures, physiological analysis, and neuroimaging; replace largely correlational cross-sectional designs with experimental and controlled longitudinal research; and use within-person designs combined with between-person analysis to capture moment-to-moment affective dynamics.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Self-report must be complemented by other assessment channels because it is limited to conscious experience and subject to recall biases
Constraints¶
- Self-report cannot provide moment-to-moment temporal resolution; between-person designs cannot investigate within-person processes
Target Learners¶
- students in educational research studies
Target Learning Goals¶
- understanding and fostering curiosity and interest during learning
Related Strategies¶
- Use multimodal data channels combining subjective and objective measures to overcome single-channel constraints in SSRL research
- Integrate physiological, dialog, video, and self-report data to analyze collaboration at individual and group levels
- Study effort regulation in real-world, personally relevant contexts over longer timeframes, including via ecological momentary assessment
- Adopt an integrative methodological toolkit using machine learning and computational models to capture SR's multi-level, temporal, and social dynamics
- Assess motivational development with multi-faceted, ongoing, longitudinal measures including scaffolding observation
- Specify the knowledge-acquisition component when using curiosity and interest terms, and prefer experience-sampling over one-shot self-report
- Use formal computational modelling to specify dynamic causal processes in motivation theories
- Employ multimodal methods to capture the multifaceted feedback process
- Adopt a staged research agenda: measure the three belief dimensions, test incremental validity, and run component-level and person-centered tests
