Build an after-school/OST-to-teaching pipeline to recruit teachers of color¶
Strategy · All strategies

Description¶
The brief identifies an underutilized strategy: "recruit and prepare those who have experience working in after-school or out-of-school time (OST) programs to enter the teaching profession." It proposes three ways: establish recruitment relationships between nontraditional preparation programs and OST providers (including Grow Your Own programs); increase scholarships, loan forgiveness, and tuition reimbursements for candidates with OST experience, focusing on candidates of color; and adopt statewide guidelines supporting nontraditional pathways with licensure test preparation and at least one year of mentor support before participants teach as teachers of record.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- States must both increase targeted recruitment of after-school/OST staff and structure programming to draw on this group's experiences during preparation
Constraints¶
- The brief calls this pipeline "potentially high-leverage" but underutilized; Louisiana currently does not invest in scholarships or loan forgiveness to attract students of color into preparation programs
Target Learners¶
- K-12 students, particularly students of color who benefit from a diverse teacher workforce
Target Learning Goals¶
- Increasing the racial diversity of the educator workforce

- Build a diverse teacher pipeline through Grow Your Own grants, teacher academies, scholarships, MSI investment, and residency pathways
- Grow-your-own teacher training programs targeting community members facing certification and career-change barriers
