Description¶
Based on the finding that the individualized identity-based AI dialogue failed while the collective one worked, the article recommends that "utilizing generative AI to establish relevance of the subject with students' immediate concerns or general relevance with different fields turned out to be more effective in promoting adolescents' relevance as identification with the subject". Concretely, AI dialogue should surface connections to current concerns such as time management and to math's applications across daily life and different fields, instead of directly linking content to ideal careers or life purpose.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Semi-structured AI dialogue under guided prompts, as implemented in the study's intervention conditions
Constraints¶
- The article notes the finding comes from adolescents in a medical vocational high school, whose identities are still developing; replication in general high school settings is suggested
Target Learners¶
- adolescent high school students
Target Learning Goals¶
- relevance as identification with school subject content
- interest in the math class
Claims¶
- The generative AI relevance intervention did not significantly increase students' interest in the math class [-W]
- Interviews indicate individualized AI-generated identity-based relevance was perceived as overly abstract, while collective AI dialogue connected math to current concerns and cross-domain applications [+W]
- A collective generative AI relevance intervention significantly improved high school students' relevance as identification with math immediately after the intervention compared with a control group [+W]
- The individualized generative AI condition showed no significant effect on relevance as identification with math compared with the control group or the collective condition [+W]
