Description¶
This strategy directs education leaders to choose data sources that connect to the specific issue or outcome they are addressing. The brief states that "Data should have a direct connection to the issue you are trying to understand or the outcomes you are trying to improve," and advises asking whether candidate data can help understand a challenge, develop a response, and monitor progress. It is the first of the brief's seven recommendations for equitable data use.
Design Implications¶

Related Strategies¶
- Use multiple, diverse data sources selected to offer distinct yet complementary information
- Schools and districts should choose screener benchmarks that match their goals and resources for defining and serving at-risk students
- Policymakers select transition interventions that directly address particular transition challenges
- Keep students' lived experiences at the center of data use and ensure data reflect students' lives
