Design AI-supported VET environments that augment human judgment and strengthen learner agency rather than replicating human instruction (avoiding the Turing Trap)¶

Description¶
The review's forward-looking recommendation is that "research and practice must move beyond replicating human instruction—avoiding the Turing Trap—and instead design learning environments that augment human judgment, strengthen learner agency, and support teachers in empathetic and holistic guidance." This strategy directs designers toward AI-empowered paradigms in which learners make autonomous decisions and co-design trajectories, and toward systems that support rather than replace teachers' guidance roles. It follows from the review's finding that agency-fostering approaches are underrepresented.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires moving beyond behaviorist drill-and-practice implementations toward designs supporting learner agency, critical reflection, and autonomous decision-making.
Constraints¶
- The review notes current evidence for such designs is thin, and future studies should investigate failure cases, contextual moderators, and boundary conditions more systematically.
Target Learners¶
- vocational education and training learners
Target Learning Goals¶
- learner agency, autonomous decision-making, occupational competence
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Ground AI integration in higher education on core principles of human agency, academic freedom, transparency, ethics, inclusivity, and critical thinking
- Design AI tutors for complementarity across role paradigms and move beyond static prompting toward dynamic learner modeling
