Rank-and-invent-principles activity over contrasting discussion transcripts¶

Description¶
A concrete implementable activity: pairs of learners receive short contrasting transcript cases printed on half sheets, rank the dialogs best to least good, and record "two to three principles that guided their ranking". Principles must explain the full ranking and be applicable to a new discussion. The ranking forces close pairwise comparisons that make the built-in contrasts stand out, and disagreements must be resolved. Supplemental new cases let learners test and refine their principles before a whole-class debrief and expert lecture.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Multiple carefully constructed contrasting transcripts; pair work with a single committed ranking; a worksheet prompting principles that explain the ranking; follow-up cases for refinement
Constraints¶
- There was no single right answer in the ranking or principles; the designed features are a subset of possible discussion features and relational or contextual aspects were not highlighted
Target Learners¶
- preservice teachers
- undergraduate prospective teachers in education courses
Target Learning Goals¶
- learning to notice key features of classroom discussion
- articulating values and principles for productive discussion
Affordances¶
- Blair2024 Contrasting Cases Synthesis Instruction
Claims¶
- All participant pairs ranked the fully student-led Dialog E best, and disagreement about the elaborative-revoicing Dialog B reflected differences in values rather than in noticing [+W]
- Preservice teachers became more likely to notice the absence of students building on each other's ideas and marginally more likely to notice open-ended questions [+W]
