Boundary crossing workshop with prototyping exercise and broker facilitation for introducing design principles to design teams¶

Description¶
A workshop intervention in which a researcher-broker introduces a set of design principles to a design team, followed by a prototyping exercise: participants build a physical prototype of their current or future HLC from handicraft materials, mark strong points with 'diamonds' and challenges with 'band-aids', then interview each other and cluster sticky notes around the design principles. The article reports the workshop "provided an opportunity to engage in conversation about the HLC" and generated ideas for practical development.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A broker familiar with the principles' original research context should conduct the workshop
- Each group should be assigned a subset of principles (three per group) so the team covers all seven while reducing complexity
- The guidebook should be made available beforehand
Constraints¶
- Existing HLCs wanted more focus on their own context; some participants expected concrete solutions and were disappointed; some preferred the workshop earlier in the design process
Target Learners¶
- interprofessional design teams designing or evaluating hybrid learning configurations
Target Learning Goals¶
- generating ideas for context-appropriate features and building a shared image of the HLC
