Calibrate AI writing support by providing contextual feedback, dialogic scaffolding, and initiative matched to learner needs and task complexity¶
Strategy · All strategies

Description¶
Derived from learners' reflective accounts in the study's thematic analysis (RQ4), this strategy holds that effective AI writing support should offer feedback tied to the learner's actual visuals and text, scaffold reasoning through dialogue rather than one-way output, and adjust how much initiative the agent takes to the learner's needs and the task's complexity. The article synthesises its qualitative themes into three interaction design heuristics for equitable, autonomy-supportive multimodal writing systems.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires the ability to vary agent initiative (reactive vs proactive triggering) and to generate feedback grounded in the current task context
Constraints¶
- The heuristics derive from post-task reflections of 79 medical and nursing students in one writing task context; the article treats them as design heuristics, not tested causal recommendations
Target Learners¶
- higher education students using AI agents for analytical writing
Target Learning Goals¶
- multimodal data interpretation
- independent writing performance
- learner autonomy with AI support
Affordances¶
- Agency Gap Ai Initiative Literacy Mismatch
Related Strategies¶
- Four design principles for educational AI that empowers epistemic agency rather than passive offloading
- Implement an AI-Peer-Teacher hybrid integrated feedback model staged across drafting, revision, and polishing phases
- Scaffolded AI integration with teacher training and reflective tasks to reduce over-reliance
- Grade AI-dialogue assignments on evidence of sustained dialogue, and explicitly teach students to answer the AI's questions
