Career-centric reverse academic planning: start from a career aspiration and map backward to courses, credentials, and experiences using skills taxonomies¶

Description¶
Instead of choosing a major then exploring careers, students begin with a career aspiration and the system works backward to the courses, experiences, and credentials that reach it. This depends on machine-readable occupational and skills taxonomies — O*NET-SOC classifying roughly one thousand occupations, the ESCO framework, and Lightcast's open skills taxonomy of more than thirty thousand skills — combined with large language models that parse job descriptions, map them to skills, compare them against course learning outcomes, and surface gaps.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Machine-readable skills taxonomies aligned against curriculum
- Labor market, cost, and debt data for return-on-education estimates
Constraints¶
- Earnings-maximizing recommendations can devalue socially important but modestly paid fields; the system should inform choices about value, not dictate them by salary alone
Target Learners¶
- higher education students choosing majors and pathways
- working and returning learners
Target Learning Goals¶
- career-aligned course sequencing
- stackable and micro-credential accumulation
- informed return-on-education decisions
Related Strategies¶
- Surround students with college-educated mentors and college-going peers to build college aspirations
