Description¶
Step 2.1 of the exercise invites teachers to "take the opportunity to also interview a caregiver of one of your students". The caregiver may be the interviewed student's caretaker or a caregiver the teacher knows well; if it is not the same student's caregiver, the article suggests trying "to get a different perspective than you received from the student". The same conduct practices apply: comfortable environment, embracing silence, and noting observations as well as answers.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The caregiver interview is optional and depends on teacher capacity and relationships; the article frames it with "If you can".
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- Caregivers of K-12 computing students
Target Learning Goals¶
- Understanding students' computing experiences from the home and family perspective
Related Strategies¶
- Conduct empathy interviews as story-based conversations in comfortable, student-chosen settings
- Close the empathy exercise by reflecting on surprises, systemic oppression, and short- and long-term design goals
