Description¶
The article recommends that "peer feedback and AI-generated revisions can be used together as complementary resources in the revision process". Students first revise drafts based on peer feedback, then compare their revisions with AI-generated versions, guided by teacher questions about whether an expression strengthens or softens the claim and how it positions alternative viewpoints. Teachers then select representative examples for class discussion of which Engagement-resource choices are appropriate in context.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher scaffolding with guiding questions and selection of representative examples for class discussion
Constraints¶
- The authors caution that, given the small participant sample, these implications should be interpreted cautiously
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate EFL writers
Target Learning Goals¶
- awareness of Engagement strategies and stance-taking in argumentative writing
Affordances¶
- Appraisal Theory Engagement Framework
Claims¶
- AI-generated revisions employ significantly more appraisal resources than peer-feedback revisions, which exceed first drafts [+W]
- Counter rises in both revision conditions, Endorse rises in peer-feedback revisions but declines in AI revisions, and Pronounce declines in both [+W]
- Entertain is the most frequently used heteroglossic subcategory across all draft types, decreasing in peer-feedback revisions but remaining relatively high in AI revisions [+W]
- Peer-feedback revisions shift toward a more contractive dialogic stance while AI-generated revisions keep a relatively balanced Contract–Expand distribution [+W]
Related Strategies¶
- Integrate ChatGPT as a feedback resource alongside peer feedback for essay writing in higher education
- Implement an AI-Peer-Teacher hybrid integrated feedback model staged across drafting, revision, and polishing phases
- Integrate AI feedback as a supportive resource within process-oriented drafting cycles, with explicit guidance on critical evaluation
