Description¶
Beyond inservice professional development, the article advocates introducing CT in teacher preparation: preservice teachers "could learn about computational thinking in core courses (such as, learning theory and educational technology courses) and then expand their understanding about how computational thinking applies in a particular subject through teaching methods courses in their licensure areas." The authors report their own work showing preservice teachers see the relevance of these ideas and can adopt them in their curriculum.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Coordination across core teacher education courses and subject-specific methods courses
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- preservice teachers in teacher education programs
Target Learning Goals¶
- understanding computational thinking and applying it in subject-area teaching
Related Strategies¶
- Embed AI training for pre-service science teachers within science pedagogy and inquiry-based teaching rather than general tool operation
- Train teachers in prompt engineering, evaluating AI-generated responses, ethical and privacy considerations, and integrating AI outputs into pedagogical decision-making
- Embed computational thinking across existing K-12 subject areas using everyday and data-based activities
