Description

The article reports evidence that a surface approach to learning (shallow information processing and extrinsic motivation) is associated with higher burnout, while a deep approach (deep information processing and intrinsic motivation) is associated with lower burnout. It therefore suggests that "encouraging and or creating environments that promote a deep approach to learning may be beneficial in regards to offsetting the effects of burnout for achievement". This positions instructional environments that foster intrinsic motivation and deep processing as a protective design choice.
