Pedagogy of deliberate counter-positioning: use generative AI in reverse so students interrogate generated positions¶
Strategy · All strategies
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article's educational recommendation is to exploit the same systems in reverse rather than prohibit them: since the risk is the system's "tendency to resolve instead of provoke", teachers can have systems generate positions that students then "interrogate, oppose, and metabolize with peers and teachers who genuinely resist". This re-anchors counter-positions in lived others, keeping the promoter function with the learner and preserving dialogical movement.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires genuinely resistant human others (peers and teachers) alongside the generated positions, since developmentally potent counter-positions must be anchored in others who resist
Constraints¶
- Stated for education in the context of constructivist practice; the underlying mechanism remains a conceptual prediction the article has not tested empirically
Target Learners¶
- University students and emerging adults using generative AI in academic settings
Target Learning Goals¶
- Exercising integrative authorship, critical engagement with AI-generated positions, retention of the promoter function
Affordances¶
- Synthetic Position Dialogical Self
Related Strategies¶
- Counter-prompting: deliberately probing AI systems for their assumptions and using responses as data about the apparatus
- Diagnostic and repair strategy in constructivist therapy: locate where the synthetic position sits and return it to an ordinary voice
- Design generative production tools with originality feedback, divergence-promoting generation, and deliberate friction anchored to documented mechanisms
