Analyze the types of errors students make on assessment items, not just correct/incorrect scores¶

Description¶
The guide's teacher notes treat scoring as a starting point for diagnosis: although each part is scored correct or incorrect, "looking at the type of errors made can be informative." Specific error patterns are interpreted, for example a child choosing the hexagon in a 'not' question may not understand the effect of the word 'not', and patterns of choices can indicate a child recalls only the first or last attribute or does not understand the vocabulary 'less than' or 'more than'.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers need the item-by-item scoring suggestions and error interpretations provided in the teacher notes
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- First-grade students
Target Learning Goals¶
- Sorting on multiple attributes and understanding comparison vocabulary
Related Strategies¶
- Diagnostic Pre Assessment
- Encourage children to model and discuss multiple solution strategies for number problems instead of hunting for clue words
- Confidence Based Quizzing
