Description¶
The authors found that instructing LLMs with naive ethical frameworks (e.g., "adopt a deontological perspective") often produced underspecified responses with vague language. To make each perspective actionable, they operationalized it as a persona with concrete behavioral guidance: demographic cues (age, gender, major), writing style, a brief ethical background, and a set of value prioritizations following VSD guidelines. This helped the agents express their positions in distinctive and specific ways.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Each persona prompt composed of demographics, ideology, and opinions, following Hwang et al.
- Pilot validation that each persona is perceived as distinctive and representative of the designated perspective
Constraints¶
- Personas were specified as undergraduate students so participants would regard them as peers rather than experts
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate STEM students discussing ethics with LLM agents
Target Learning Goals¶
- Exposure to distinct yet interconnected moral approaches (care, deontological, pragmatic ethics)
Claims¶
Related Strategies¶
- Generate multiple concise LLM perspectives for learners to select from, and explore relevance-driven diversity aligned with learner interests
- Adopt ethical safeguards and pedagogically grounded frameworks when deploying GenAI assessment tools
