Evaluate and mitigate sentiment bias across sensitive attributes before deploying LLM forum support¶

Description¶
The article's practice recommendations are to measure sentiment bias in LLM-generated forum replies across sensitive attributes and to counter it with counterfactual fine-tuning before deployment. The authors "propose absolute distributional sentiment divergence (ADSD), a novel metric to evaluate and reduce sentiment bias across sensitive attributes such as gender", and report that combining original and counterfactual data in fine-tuning effectively reduces bias. They also recommend explainable quality evaluation, using TIGERSCORE to check response quality alongside fairness.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Access to a post-reply corpus, a sentiment classifier, and the ability to fine-tune the chosen LLMs on both original and counterfactual data
Constraints¶
- The demonstrated case study covers gender as a binary attribute; the method is argued to generalize to other attributes but was applied to gender
Target Learners¶
- online and MOOC discussion forum participants
Target Learning Goals¶
- equitable, transparent AI-generated support in online learning discussions
Affordances¶
Related Strategies¶
- Evaluate AI systems before deploying them with students
- Use pedagogical knowledge benchmarks to guide model selection and fine-tuning for educational AI, with ethical guardrails and human-in-the-loop deployment
- Apply error mitigation such as self-consistency before deploying LLM-generated help, and frame unmitigated LLM feedback as an imperfect source
