Extend educational LLM benchmarks with broader item formats, human-in-the-loop item curation, and multi-turn evidence-based feedback measures¶

Description¶
The authors recommend several concrete next steps for educational LLM benchmarking. Because reviewed items lacked "graphical elements such as diagrams, figures, or graphs" and data interpretation tasks, "future iterations of the benchmark could incorporate a wider range of item formats to better reflect the breadth of practices emphasized within the NGSS." They also recommend human-in-the-loop review and editing of LLM-generated items, and ultimately benchmarking multi-turn dialogue: measuring whether models can provide feedback aligned with evidence-based feedback and scaffolding strategies while maintaining accurate content knowledge.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Human reviewers with relevant K-12 teaching experience and no role in item generation; benchmark infrastructure capable of representing graphics, data interpretation, and multi-turn dialogue.
Constraints¶
- The sampled review covered only a subset of items, so absent standards in the sample should not be interpreted as absent from the full dataset.
Target Learners¶
- middle school students
- high school students
Target Learning Goals¶
- NGSS science practices including data interpretation, mathematical reasoning, and evidence-based feedback in tutoring dialogue
Related Strategies¶
- Extend educational LLM benchmarking toward multilingual contexts, real classroom interaction data, and targeted training for identified capability gaps
- Pair a contamination-resistant static benchmark core with a learner-in-the-loop layer for next-generation education evaluation
- Establish standardized misconception benchmarks using isomorphic items, paraphrases, and multi-turn curricula
- Improve LLM grading alignment through LLM-optimized guidelines, calibration examples, and median-of-parallels grading
