Design AI writing support to reduce ownership loss: fade AI interactions over time, generate incomplete text requiring rewriting, and make the chatbox editable¶

Description¶
Based on their finding that AI support at different writing stages has different ownership costs, the authors present three design implications for AI writing tools: "temporally fading out AI interactions, generating incomplete text that requires rewriting, and making the chatbox editable." These aim to keep writers contributing text and ideas themselves, since greater AI contribution of both was associated with lower ownership, while AI contribution improved essay quality.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A writing-support system whose AI interaction timing, output completeness, and input interface are designable
Constraints¶
- The article reports these as design implications from one experiment; the ownership-quality tradeoff means preserving ownership may cost essay quality
Target Learners¶
- Writers using AI writing assistants, including students in writing classrooms
Target Learning Goals¶
- Preserving writer ownership and engagement while benefiting from AI assistance
Affordances¶
- Materialist Idealist Ownership Routes Writing
